APTIM HSE Manager in Baton Rouge, Louisiana


Candidate will be responsible for managing all HSE aspects of a business line engaged in remediation and construction based operations. In this capacity, the candidate will be responsible for developing, implementing and/or administering health, safety & environmental protection programs affecting occupational health, employee and public safety, fire protection and prevention, incident investigation and loss control, responsible environmental practices and equipment & property protection.


Candidate will serve as a resource to Site, Project and Program Managers in regards to matters pertaining to Health, Safety & Environmental compliance with applicable federal, state, local, client and APTIM rules and regulations. Candidate will also serve as a resource for executive management to develop, administer and oversee the implementation of a proactive Health, Safety & Environmental Management System designed to manage risks while protecting employees and client personnel from incidents and illnesses on primarily remedial and construction related projects. Candidate must be able to support and manage industrial hygiene (IH), industrial safety and environmental compliance activities at various work locations including some international sites. Shall possess the ability to develop programs and practices including hazard evaluations that will support all work activities performed on complex and high-risks projects.

Candidate must possess an ability to work with all personnel engaged in these projects including executives, project management, HSE peers, operational personnel, clients and regulators. Candidate should be able to demonstrate ability to work and influence client and organizational leadership to set priorities, solidify relationships, while possessing the ability to ensure company and client compliance with APTIM Health, Safety & Environmental procedures, Occupational Safety and Health Administration regulations, United States Army Corps of Engineers EM 385-1-1 and other job-specified procedures or standards. Must be able to identify business issues that may impact organizational results, develop business plans and budgets to achieve functional, cross-functional objectives or operational objectives while deploying and managing to achieve financial and business objectives across multiple functional areas. Possess ability to communicate, present or justify overall Health and Safety performance to management as necessary, participates in executive level meetings including board meetings, financial reviews, strategic planning, etc.., take active role presenting proposals to prospective clients and leveraging the performance management cycle to motivate employees and support achievement of objectives are essential for this opportunity


  • Past environmental related work experience including projects involving chemically contaminated locations, unexploded ordnance work and sites containing radiological contamination.

  • Work experience should include confined spaces, work at heights (fall protection) and other novel work practices.

  • Experience working with chemical warfare and biological agents is also beneficial.

  • Manage and deploy HSE resources within and/or across multiple geographical areas, foreign and domestic.

  • Work in both indoor and outdoor environments; outdoor environments will include a variety of harsh weather conditions, including but not limited to extreme heat, extreme cold, rain, sleet and snow.

  • Travel as required and available to report to work upon "short notice" (within 72 hours) of job need.

  • Previous experience conducting HSE training programs to all levels of personnel.

  • Requires 50 -- 70% travel.

This position is subject to onsite hazards including but not limited to: moving industrial equipment, hazardous energies (LOTO), confined spaces, climbing ladders, working at heights, working on uneven or unimproved surfaces and areas of high noise levels, etc.

Candidate shall be able to be medically qualified (HAZWOPER physical) including respiratory clearance through evaluation of ability to wear a respirator.

Candidate must possess:

  • A valid driver's license with clean driving record.

  • Excellent communication skills are required, both written and verbal, including interpersonal and leadership abilities as well as moderate to advanced computer and presentation skills.

  • Minimum of a B.S. in Safety, Environmental, Engineering or related field; should include coursework in HSE Management, HSE Regulatory Requirements, Workers' Compensation, etc.

  • 10+ years of progressive HSE Supervisory and Management experience, including experience in working with U. S. Government clients and their associated HSE requirements (e.g. USACE EM 385-1-1).

  • Professional certification in a Health, Safety and/or Environmental discipline (CIH, CSP or CHMM) is required.

  • Master of Science degree in a Health, Safety and/or Environmental discipline or a closely related field may be substituted for the professional certification in Health, Safety and/or Environmental discipline (CIH, CSP or CHMM) requirement.

  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions.

  • Informed, analytical and comprehensive approach to problems.

  • Strong quantitative, analytical skills and problem solving skills.

  • Background in developing and presenting HSE based training programs.
