APTIM Fire Prevention Specialist in Ft. Irwin, California
Fire Prevention Specialist, works within the fire prevention office under the direction of the Fire Prevention Chief. Shall perform all fire prevention functions as assigned including, fire inspections, prevention classes, extinguisher classes, family child care provider certification classes, engineering reviews, issue permits.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS :
Completes assigned monthly inspections.
Issues corrective action deficiencies and high hazard violations.
Inspects single story, multi story, commercial and Industrial buildings.
Checks building plans and the installation of sprinkler systems, fire alarms systems and other fire protection devices and equipment for compliance with applicable codes.
Inspects hospitals and other care facilities
Inspects child care facilities and schools
Uses a computer and related software to prepare detailed inspection reports and a variety of other reports and correspondence.
Develops and participates in related public information and education programs, makes oral presentations and gives demonstrations to a variety of groups.
Responds to public inquiries and complaints relating to fire safety matters.
Operates a motor vehicle
Learn, interpret, enforce applicable Codes and Regulations.
Supplementary Functions May Include :
Coordinate exhaust system cleaning program with High Deserts Support Services subcontractors.
Teach prevention classes to Fire Department personnel and the general public.
Issue hot work permits.
Completes reports and records as assigned.
Assists with new construction inspections and plan review for new projects.
JOB PREREQUISITES/QUALIFICATIONS/SKILLS :
Educational / Experience Equivalent:
Must possess high school diploma or equivalent.
Minimum of 1 year fire service related experience
- Valid California Class C Driver's License
Must complete the following certifications within 1 year of employment:
DoD Inspector I & II
DoD Haz Mat Awareness
DoD Instructor I
Must complete the following certifications within 2 years of employment
DoD Inspector II
DoD Instructor II
Must know Modern Prevention techniques.
Ability to comprehend written laws & regulations
Ability to speak to groups
Prepare written reports
- Must be able to read, write, and speak fluent English.
Physical/Mental Abilities Required:
Must be able to use codes, regulations and technical manuals and interpret material and provide technical assistance to IAP, Government, Civilian and Contractor personnel and Military.
Ability to read blueprints and construction plans.
Must be able to act professionally in the presence of the Public and members of the Fire Department.
Ability to be punctual and meet appointments promptly.
Ability to use good judgment and common sense when performing job functions.
Ability to follow written and verbal instructions in English.
Employee training as necessary, assist with public education programs and seasonal campaigns, issues and record permits.
The ability to schedule and conduct fire evacuation drills and maintains records.
The ability to draft articles and submit to the PAO for print into the newspaper and family housing letter.
Teach fire extinguisher classes and social event participation in recreation centers, etc.
WORKING CONDITIONS :
Position: Frequent exposure to dust, desert pollen, extreme heat and cold associated with desert environment and natural conditions existing on FortIrwin. May be required to perform long hours of duty under adverse conditions to include extreme weather changes.
Work Week: Monday -- Friday
Work Hours: 0730-1600
Overtime: As Required

EQUIPMENT/TOOLS USED :
Motor Vehicle, personal computer, measuring wheel, codebooks and NFPA manuals, telephone, two-way radio.
OTHER WORK-RELATED DUTIES AS MAY BE ASSIGNED.
