APTIM Scientist in Galveston, Texas

Job Overview:

APTIM, a leading engineering firm with a global presence and a thriving coastal engineering practice, is pleased to announce an immediate opening for an entry-level Scientist in an "as needed" part-time field technician role of marine geoscientist/field technician for work throughout the Southeast and Gulf region. The home office for this employee will be Houston, Texas; however, APTIM is open to employees currently located in the general region to telecommute with occasional responsibilities in Houston. This position has tremendous growth and career development potential for a passionate geoscientist. The position will involve collecting, processing, analyzing and interpreting a variety of high-resolution remotely sensed data including sidescan sonar, photogrammetry, multibeam sonar, shallow-penetration chirp sub-bottom, and magnetometer. Additionally, responsibilities may include SCUBA diving operations, topographic and hydrographic surveying, boat operations, and collection and processing of marine vibracores. The employee will assist senior staff with field data acquisition as well as help produce data to prepare engineering, geological and geohazard maps, technical and scientific reports and presentations for regulatory, facilities siting, foundation-design and a variety of other engineering applications in a team setting. The candidate must be willing to travel and be able to adapt to challenging coastal environments.

Key Responsibilities/Accountabilities:

  • Collection and interpretation of a wide array of geotechnical, geophysical, geologic, topographic, hydrographic and scientific data.

  • Development of analyses, evaluations, maps, position papers, procedures and reports.

  • Ensure conformance to applicable technical standards as well as company policies and procedures.

  • Review of applicable regulations that may impact project scope.

  • Communication of technical concepts, evaluation results, plans, reports, etc. via oral and written reporting; and ensures conformance to applicable technical standards as well as company policies and procedures.

  • Working with RTK GPS, UAS, geophysical (chirp sub-bottom, sidescan sonar, magnetometers, etc.), SCUBA, topographic, hydrographic and geotechnical (vibracores, surface grab samplers, etc.) equipment.

  • Open to travel and extended field assignments in coastal environments.


  • Bachelor degree in coastal science, coastal resource management or related field of study required.

  • Experience with remote sensing data acquisition and analysis including UAS Photogrammetry, ROV Photography, sidescan sonar and magnetometer preferred.

  • Experience with geotechnical systems (including vibracores and grab samplers, etc.) preferred.

  • Experience with land and hydrographic surveying systems and methods including RTG GPS, Depth Sounders, and marine navigation systems.

  • Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or ability to acquire highly recommended.

  • Interprets customer needs, assesses requirements and identifies solutions to nonstandard requests.

  • Solves moderately complex problems; takes a new perspective on existing solutions.

  • Manages own time to meet agreed targets; develops plans for short-term work activities in own area.
